How We Bottle the Magic of the Cascades

How We Bottle the Magic of the Cascades

If you’ve ever hiked through the Cascades right after a heavy rain, you know the smell. It’s crisp, earthy, deep, and incredibly refreshing. It’s the smell of ancient soil, damp fern fronds, and towering evergreens.

At PNW Candle Co., our biggest inspiration has always been the wilderness in our own backyard. But how exactly do you capture the essence of a mountain range and put it into a jar? Here is a peek behind the curtain at how we build our nature-inspired scent profiles.

Deconstructing the Forest A great forest scent isn't just one note—it’s a layered experience.

  • The Canopy (Top Notes): We start with crisp, bright notes like fresh pine needle and crisp mountain air. This is the first thing you smell when you take the lid off.

  • The Trunk (Middle Notes): This is the heart of the candle. We use rich, woody profiles like blue spruce, cedarwood, and balsam fir to give the scent its rugged character.

  • The Forest Floor (Base Notes): To make the scent authentic, it needs earthiness. We blend notes of damp earth, oakmoss, and a touch of petrichor (the beautiful scent of rain hitting dry earth) to anchor the fragrance.

Crafting the Experience We spend months testing these blends, ensuring that when you light the wick, it doesn’t smell like an artificial air freshener—it smells like a real hike through Washington's trails.

Next time you’re stuck at your desk wishing you were out on the trail, light up an Ever Green candle. Close your eyes, and you’re halfway there.
